After seven years of the establishment of Debre Berhan Junior Health Assistant Training Center, Department of Pharmacy was established in 2005 aiming to produce mid-level pharmacy professionals, who will take part and have tremendous roles in the provision of pharmaceutical
services to the community. The department is one of oldest departments of Debre Berhan Health Science College which was formerly known as Debre Berhan Junior Health Assistant Training Center. Starting from its establishment, the department is stationed in the college’s compound where it brings about its goal with one general purpose pharmacy laboratory and two offices and many shared class rooms.
Since 2005, the department offers pharmacy courses and commences training of pharmacy technicians at Diploma level in regular program. Furthermore, the department had also been offering extension training program from 2006 to 2011. The trainees of the department pass through in school practices and apprenticeships (currently called cooperative training) where they grasp adequate knowledge and equip with skills in pharmaceutical sciences which will be utilized as a tool in their professional carrier. The department started and delivering the programs with holistic approach until 2012 but since 2013, modular-based training approach is being followed.
The department has participated in different time during the curricula revision of the mid-level pharmacy education in Ethiopia. As part of the nationally recognized shift from holistic to modular-based approach in the health science colleges, the department adopts and working with the new curriculum starting from 2013.
Since its establishment up to January 2017, a total of 448 pharmacy technicians were graduated from the department, of which 266 technicians and 182 technicians attended through regular and extension programs respectively. The department has been striving for competence of the trainees and putting great efforts for health education quality. These efforts are witnessed by high performance of the graduated technicians at their respective deployment and by different stakeholders.
Moreover, the department has been taking forward steps to equip itself with skilled academic staffs for its eagerness to open degree programs in clinical pharmacy in affiliation with Debre Berhan University. Currently, the department has four master holder staffs, five degree holder staffs and two staffs who are attending their master program and one staff attending his degree program. With these academics, the department is rendering the teaching and training activities and actively involving in research and community services.
